Dana
Point, California. -- March 24th, 2002
The 1st Annual Dana Point Halibut Tournament finally got off on March 23/24th after gale force winds the previous weekend postponing the event. Saturday produced a front with rain at the start of the 1st day. The second day saw a red flag posted at the Dana Harbor patrol office forcing Sunday's fishing to be called off due to safety concerns and tournament rules called by tournament director. After many teams canceled due to weather and prior commitments we still managed to get 84 boats out fishing and 233 anglers for a cash pay out 1-5th place been over $10 000.00 and not including prizes and awards. Fishing was very slow due to the harsh weather we had, local spots did not produce for many local teams as the water was very cold, green and dirty with only 16 fish to the scales. Top honors went to several local boats out of Dana Point harbor, Local boats/teams were Team Raptor 1st - Dana Point, Team Top Gun 3rd - Team Snap on from Dana Point taking 4th place. The win was even more rewarding for Team Raptor since they regularly fish out of Dana Point Harbor and this was their first fishing tournament ever entered. Team Raptor showed me pictures of even larger halibut they have caught locally than their first placed fish below. Congratulations to all. Team Raptors
early morning big fish weighed in at 33lbs and 8oz, 42 inches
by angler John Yancey below. (Additional
