Fishing
for
the first time in a tournament as a Father son team, Team Ashley Ray
Captained by 70 year old Hal Williams, son David Williams and Danny Williams took top honours in the Dana Point Mako Madness Tournament. The Mako Madness saw 41 teams compete on a full moon for USD $ 56 800.00 with 159 registered anglers releasing 269 mako's. All qualified for the Brand New Truck that was purchased and donated by Finnseeker. Each angler entered had their name placed into the drawing and the winning angler drawn drove the truck home Sunday night at the awards banquet. Start fishing at 6.00 am Saturday saw teams calling in early several released fish since the tornament format encourages releases, taking a picture of your released fish to qualify for the USD $ 3000.00 Cash release prize donated by the tournament organisors. Saturday saw 173 mako's released and no boated bfish over the min legal limit of 100 lbs to qualify for the first 3 places. Leading teams again on the first day were Team Dream Weaver Captained by William Clark, followed by Team Waterbase closely both with 10 fish each. The teams were excited heading into Sundays fishing as per the tournament rules, no fish caught over the legal minimum all monies are rolled over to the following day leaving everything wide open and huge jackpots and payouts for the lucky teams. The teams were eager to set off Sunday leaving the harbor at 3.00am to get to their desired or designated fishing spots before lines in at 6.00am. Sunday saw the teams start off early again for the most released fish and hook ups been called in immediately at 6.00am. Saturday's weather dictated where most teams would fish on Sunday and most elected to had south or stay close to Dana point. Team Wine Cooler Captained by Harlem Johnson called in at 9.30am with a boated mako and wanted to come in and weigh the fish since they were so excited as they were in all the side jackpots and now the only boated fish for the whole tournament. The fish weighed in at 106 lbs and the only fish for the tournament. The question on everyones mind based on Saturday's results , could this be enough to win ? By 11.00 oclock Sunday Team Sea Cup had called in a boated fish as well and the radio silence, pateince and agony began for both teams. Could they have enough, did they have enough to be a contender and who would get the money. The radio action was a buzz, what was the fork length, how big is the fish , when are you going to weigh it in and Team Sea Cup Mattew Glisson elected to saty out and continue fishing creating even more speculation and putting the preassure on all teams leaving them hanging not knowing. By 2.00 pm Team Rhadical captained by Bob Rhadigan radioed in their boated fish and request to come to the scales and weigh their fish in and were heading to the scales and would be in at 3.00pm to weigh in. Team Rhadical's fish weighed in at 108 lbs taking the lead bumping Team Wine Cooler off the top. Team Ashley Ray Captained by Hal Williams the all Father son team called in that they to had just boated a fish floowed by Team Aloha also calling in a boated fish. All teams had to be at the sacles by 5.00pm and teams were now rushing to beat the deadline to get their boated fish weighed in. Team Ashley Ray's fish weighed in at 116 lbs taking them into first place and the tension was on as 3 other teams still had to weigh in a fish with one team still fighting a big fish unable to get it to the boat and probably not going to make it back to the scales ontime keep everyone guessing. At 5.00 pm they were still fighting the fish but it would not qualify and eventually they lost the fish. Team Ashley Ray's success comes with the following words from Captain Hal Williams I had asked my wife IF I name the boat after our newly
born
first granddaughter, Ashley Ray, could I buy the boat and she agreed.
So the 30' Albemarle wears the name "Ashley Ray."
The final day of the Mako Madness tournament was Sunday,
July 24th, 2005 which was Ashley's 4th birthday. It
was also the
birthday of
her father, Steve, our son in law. It was the first time I had decided to go with my two sons, David and Daniel and make it the Williams fishing team. all the entry money and all the side bets rolled over to
Sunday the 24th. Ashley's birthday. I called her from the
boat early
AM when we got to
"the spot" to wish her happy birthday and apologize for missing her party. She gave me her love and with her mom's coaching said..."Good luck Pop Pops." 1st Place Team Ashley Ray 116 lbs USD $ 20 325.00 2nd Place Team Sea Cup 112 lbs USD $ 7 155.00 3rd Place Team Radical 108 lbs USD $ 4 770.00 Top release boat with 30 released mako's earning them the USD $ 3000.00 which went to Team WaterBase Captained by Jason Colombo Tournament picture Gallery - Click here 1st Place team pictured Hal Williams, David Williams and Danny Williams with their 116 lb fish ( attached ) The truck was won by team Sea Cup who also too second place overall Mattew Glisson see picture 3rd Place Team Rhadical Please contact the following committee members in your area
