Press Release : Dana Point, CA  24th July 2006

The 8th Annual Mako Madness tournament success was again attributed to both the successful format having both a catch and release division. There were a total of 121 fish released for the two days and 4 fish weighed in. The Format provided entrants options to release or keep their fish over the required min weight. The release division paid out $ 3000.00 cash to the winning Team "One Hot Tuna " for the most released fish accumulated over the two days ( 16 fish). Team Digging Reel Deep finished 2nd with 15 released Mako's. The 2006 event proved to be a bigger challenge with the coastal waters been a lot hotter and warmer than previous years making fishing very difficult toppled with very rough seas and windy conditions for Saturdays fishing.

This did not prevent First Place Team Guido Margarita running 90 miles one way in search of fish which paid off with their winning fish caught Saturday of 226 lbs. Father son team of Guido Margarita elected not to fish the second day after been beaten up in the return and long run from Saturday with boat problems. Fortunately for them their fish held on to take overall 1st place but they lost a substantial amount of money by not taking the Sunday jackpots which went to Team Psyc-O-Fish with a 101 lbs to collect all Sundays Jackpots.

Second place went to team Temporary Sanity who weighed in their fish early Saturday morning 139.5 lbs and waited all weekend to see if their fish would hold its 2nd place which it did. Third place went to Team Midnight Sun with their 136 lb Mako.

The entry fee of $ 150.00 qualified each angler an opportunity to win the truck which was drawn on Sunday evening at the dinner which Dan Carlson of the One Hot Rail was drawn and the truck given away.

Saturday all the teams were permitted to leave the harbor after midnight to run to their fishing locations. Teams are not permitted to have any lines in the water until start fishing at 6.00am each day. Within minutes after start fishing the hooks up started and continued throughout the day with the better bite coming in the afternoon. The release division was neck and neck each day with One hot Tuna, Digging Reel Deep, Dream Weaver and One hot Tuna all calling in their released fish for the release division. There were fewer fish lost by the teams this year as in previous years and released fish are required to have a picture taken with the tournament provided camera's and confirmation code to validate the release and fish to qualify for the $ 3000.00 in the release division. The few lost fish were on the larger size with gaffs bouncing off the fish and very frustrated anglers.
