"1st Halibut Championship Series Results- Pending"

LAST EDITED ON 18-11-02 AT 08:32 PM (PST)

The ALLCOAST/FINNSEEKER Halibut Championship Series got off
to a super start with two superb days of weather and some good fish to
the scales. Fishing was tough going for most both days catching many
shorts and many legal sized fish but not the tournament min 24 inches.
Start fishing was 6.00am both days and teams, anglers could leave the
harbors for their favorite spot at anytime provided no lines were in the
water fishing for halibut before 6.00am

We had a total of 32 teams enter with 77 anglers, many unfamiliar to
Huntington Harbor area and many had never fished this area before making
the two days of fishing even more of a challenge and some what frustrating
for many a good angler.

Saturday:
The big fish was a 29 lb 8oz, 38 7/8 inches long halibut was weighed in
Saturday by Marc Levine from Dana Point fishing on Team Ahi Nui
caught off the Pipe in Huntington in 23 ft of water. Both Team Mate
Dan Pitkin and Marc Levine had never fished this area before until
the tournament. Not to be outclassed Brian Yoshida fishing on Team
Pukahd brought two big halibut to the scales, 1st fish weighed
8 lbs 15oz 27 3/4 inches and the second fish weighed 11 lbs 15oz
31 inches long. Saturday saw a total of 12 fish weighed in only
leaving the tournament wide open still for Sunday with anglers and teams
viewing for points for the overall championship. Saturday's big
fish jackpot winnings were $530.00

Sunday :
This was another great weather/fishing day with warm weather, flat seas
and little current/drift early in the day. There were only 9 legal sized halibut
weighed in Sunday

The first fish to the scales and the biggest fish for Sunday was
Brad York from Team Butt Boys with a 13 lb 7oz fish and fishing in
their first ever halibut tournament. Since this was their first tournament
Brad did not get into any team event or the biggest fish jackpot for
the day. Brad would have taken home the daily jackpot for Sunday
had they entered the $10.00 daily which amounted to $520.00 for
Sunday. The Sunday Daily Jackpot was scooped up by Brian Yoshida
on Team Pukahd with his 12 lb 12oz halibut 31.5 inches long and
close behind him was Josh Dunlap fishing on Team Witchcraft with
a 10 lb 13oz fish 30.5 inches long.

Every fish counted both days for the team event and overall standings
towards the grand series prize the $50 000.00 cash and Ford Truck
with some teams weighing in two and three fish for their points.

The Team event was won by Team Ahi Nui, Dan Pitkin and Marc Levine
with a combined two fish, bonus points and weight of 39 lbs and 8oz for two days
giving them an average of 19.5 lbs earning them $1040.00 for the team.
Close behind was Team Puhahd with a combined weight 33lbs 10oz for his
3 fish, bonus points giving him an average of 16.5 lbs and and
Team Bloody Mess 29 lbs 10oz for two days 15 lbs average.

Sunday saw only one team weigh in two fish and that was Team Ashley Ray
out of Dana Point with both fish been caught by David Williams. The whole
series is based on points so every legal fish counts a pushing them into
contention for the series overall points.

Top teams will be administered polygraphs this week and results made official
and posted. Pictures of the tournament are been put up on the leader board
and tournament standings board later today.

Chris - Really want to thank you and all involved in this weekends
Finnseeker Halibut Tournament. Will definately be looking forward
to the Dana Point event and doing some serious catching up
after drawing a blank this time around. We definately had
our chances but guess you could say "that's fishing".
My partner, Keith Larsen, won the 9:00 am drawing and we were
wondering what we need to do to claim that prize? Any info
you might give would be appreciated.
Like I said, really enjoyed this round and meeting everyone.

   Hi Chris,
Just want to say thanks again, to both you and Don.
For a fine job on the tourney.
Overall it was tough fishing for Romy and I.
But, we still had a great time, and the weather and water conditions were absolutely beautiful, with a fantastic sunrise both days.
I'll add pic's later.
Looking forward to the next one at Dana.
Nice not having to travel any distance.
Jersey Bro.
Jimbo
